North West Island is the largest coral cay in the Capricorn Group with a surrounding reef, dense tall pisonia forest and is an important nesting ground for seabirds and turtles. The Green Sea Turtle and the endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtle nest on the island between November and February.
A Turtle soup cannery operated on the island from 1904 to 1914 and 1924 to 1926. The environmental importance of North West Island was recognised when it was included as part of Capricornia Cays National Park in 1994.
These days fishing and snorkelling around the island's extensive coral reefs offer the ideal escape from the mainland. There is self-sufficient camping with provision for 150 campers, but be sure to take water and a fuel stove. Campsite bookings are necessary.
