The Mt Field National Park is one of Tasmania's most loved national parks. The park essentially has two visitor sections & has a wide variety of scenic features and wildlife and offers a great range of facilities.

The first, near the park entrance, includes picnic facilities and the famous Russell Falls. Stunning walks through enormous fern forests and some of the tallest trees in the world are available in this area. The second visitor section is centred at Lake Dobson and includes the long day walks and skiing areas. Dramatic mountain scenery and alpine plant communities are a feature of the higher parts of the park.

Flora & Fauna - There are more than 433 higher plant species recorded in Mt Field National Park. The alpine communities found on the tops of the mountains and plateaux of the park are characterised by a mosaic of heath, herb field, bogs and bolster moor communities. The subalpine forests and woodlands of the park are characterised by several Tasmanian endemic conifers including the pencil pine.

Further Information
The great majority of Tasmania's native terrestrial and arboreal mammals occur within Mt Field National Park. The diversity of habitats within the park's relatively small area is responsible for such a diversity of species. Species that are either extinct or endangered on the mainland are found in the park, such as the eastern quoll. Birds have taken advantage of the range of altitudes and habitats available, and consequently many species are found within the park and reserves.
