Green Island has been a popular tourist resort for more than a century. The island became a national park in 1937, a marine park in 1974 and part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area in 1981. Today the island, reef and beaches are managed as a recreation area. The small forested coral cay, which, despite its popularity as a tourist destination, has in places retained its secluded character and tranquil natural setting, was declared a national park in 1937. The surrounding reefs and waters were protected as a marine park in 1974. The island's significant recreational values were further protected when it was declared a recreation area in 1990.
The island is within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority manage the island and surrounding waters as protected areas.
Green Island is the most popular destination on the Great Barrier Reef. This 12ha island is a true coral cay formed over thousands of years by the build-up of sand and coral rubble deposited on the calm side of a platform reef.
Facilities on the island include resort accommodation, showers, drinking water, disabled access, toilets, a park ranger, ferry service, anchorage (only on sand), picnic tables, shops, restaurants and eateries.
