This recreation area has bushland, open space and 16 km of foreshore in six different sections around Lake Macquarie. The coastal and lake foreshore forest is important habitat for kangaroos, wallabies, gliders and many birds.

A number of other bays, such as Awaba Bay with a newly constructed walking track along the foreshore with great water views, wildlife and flora, are great for birdwatching.
