Holyrood Park or Queen's Park as its sometimes known is an area of five miles diameter. It is a sea of tranquillity in an otherwise hectic city. The park is a natural wilderness and encompasses hills, crags, marshes, glens, lochs and fields. It is strangely more popular with locals than tourists, which makes it even more of a haven. The area is a great spot for outdoor sports with anything from cycling to rock climbing encouraged.
It is possible to drive through the park, however a walk is strongly recommended. Two walks begin from the gates of the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The first follows the lower line of the Salisbury Crags and the top of basalt crags to provide dramatic views of Edinburgh. Another walk takes the hiker to St Margaret's Loch where St Anthony's Chapel ruins lay.
