Only 10 minutes drive from the city centre you can experience the best of nature at Blackbutt Reserve. Modern spacious facilities allow close viewing of wildlife such as koalas, kangaroos, emus, wallabies, wombats and a wide variety of Australian bird species.
Located in the suburbs of Kotara and new Lambton, the Reserve covers 182 hectares of ridge spurs and sheltered gullies. It provides protection and a habitat for a colony of fruit bats, whose habitat can be reached via a beautiful rainforest walk. These bats are vital to ensure the future regeneration of this unique piece of vegetation. There is also rainforest regeneration project happening on the Reserve.
The gullies of the Reserve shelter a forest brimming with edible and useful plants such as Native Rasberries or Headache Vine. Admire the lovely Chinese Lantern-like flowers of the Blueberry Ash. Visitors are offered the chance to observe nature first hand as Blackbutt Reserve has a Koala display and aviary where you can learn about Koalas and local birds.
