This beautiful recreational area is located on a coastal strip bounded by the Newcastle suburbs of Merewether and Dudley. It seeks to protect the last remaining remnant of coastal temperate rainforest in the Newcastle region.
Walk the Yuelerbah Track from Burwood Road that follows Flaggy Creek and see where the sweet waters of the almost extinct natural creeks carve through sandstone and wash over rocks into pools, down waterfalls then into Glenrock Lagoon.
Glenrock State Recreation Area together with Awabakal Nature Reserve conserves 700 hectares of coastal bushland. The biodiversity in this region is great, with twenty-one distinct vegetation communities and 140 species of birds, a sugar glider colony and many other local wildlife species, both rare and common.
Along the coastline rock pools give you access to a magical underwater world where you can discover all different varieties of marine life lurking in rock crevices or swimming in the wide open ocean. If you visit in late June or July, scan the horizon for majestic Humpback Whales, cruising north on their annual migration.
