The swamp is an important habitat for the cattle egret and numerous other bird species. The reserve also protects a historic quarry containing scientifically important 90-120 million-year-old sediments from ancient glacial thaw water.

The observation tower makes an excellent spot to watch birds in their natural state. Camping is not permitted.
