At Yarra Bend Park, the largest area of natural vegetation near the City of Melbourne, the landscape varies from steep, wild river escarpments to open woodlands, formal parkland, playing fields and golf courses. It has over 16 kilometres of river frontage, and superb views of the city and the Dandenongs from the higher areas.
Flora & Fauna134 species of birds have been seen in the park. You may also catch sight of echidnas, native Water Rats and Brush-tail and Ringtail Possums.
Here, at Yarra Bend Park, are the last stands of original bushland in inner Melbourne, and more than 60 plant species either rare or locally significant. The Basalt Plains Wildflower Garden is a re-created wetland area and refuge for rare and endangered plants to be propogated for seed collection.
