Carmarthen Castle is a magnificent structure overlooking the River Twyi and which previously dominated the medieval town. This is one of the many great attractions in the area of Carmarthen, a must for anyone visiting the area.
Stone defences augmented the original motte in the early 13th century, the curtain wall was added later that century and the gatehouse and the southwest tower was added in the 14th century. The castle recently underwent a restoration programme uncovering many hidden secrets including evidence of the bridge that separated the gatehouse form Nott Square. In the 18th century the castle was converted to use as a prison.
