On a geologically rich part of the New England Tablelands, this recreation area has beautiful scenery, several historical sites, and an amazing variety of woodland plants and animals. Fossickers seek topaz, emerald, sapphire and quartz crystal here.

There are visitor facilities at Nomads picnic area, where Thunderbolts Lookout offers spectacular 360-degree views. You can also walk to the curious rock formation called Mystery Face.

Getting There
Torrington State Conservation Area is a one hour drive from Glen Innes and Tenterfield, and two hours from Inverell, on mostly-sealed roads. Leave the New England Highway at Deepwater, 45 kilometres north of Glen Innes, turn west onto the Stannum Road and follow the signs.
