Mount Cole State Forest straddles the west of the Great Dividing Range and abuts Mt Buangor State Park. Less frequented than other bushland areas in the region, Mt Cole State Forest reamins relatively undisturbed. There is a 250 km system of roads and tracks throughout the forest, many of which are suitable for 4WD only.
Mt Cole's granite plateau (990m) provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Tall Manna Gums, Blue Gums and Messmate Stringybarks dominate the forest in which over 325 vaieties of plants are represented, including the rare Mt Cole Grevillea. Thirty-six different bird species have also been found. The Forest supplies timber produce to two local sawmills on a sustainable-yeild basis.
There are seven picnic and camping areas and a walking track system of approximately 30km comprising short, family-orientated circuits to more difficult day and overnight hikes.
