The Ngarkat group of Conservation Parks is a complex of 4 adjoining parks, Scorpion Springs, Mt Rescue, Mt Shaugh and Ngarkat, covering 270,000 ha of native vegetation.

When combined with the neighbouring Big Desert Park in Victoria, more than 800,000 ha is conserved. The Park comprises a complex of sand dunes stabilised by a unique mosaic of heath and mallee.

Early attempts to farm this country failed as can be seen in the ruins at Box Flat. Access to the Park in conventional vehicles is via the sealed Pinnaroo Bordertown road that takes you through the middle of the Park to Pertendi Hut. All other tracks in the park are suitable only for four wheel drives.

Further Information
Peaceful extended bushwalk through stringybark mallee and native pines. Be well prepared with water, a hat and sturdy shoes. Cool weather only. Networks with Nanam Well and Fishponds.
Special Features
A large park covering around 270,000 hectares of mallee and heathland over remnant coastal dunes. Between the dunes, surface soaks often occur which allow brown stringybark and square fruited mallee to grow. Animals found in the park include Echidnas, Pygmy Possums, Dunnarts and Grey Kangaroos, with more than twenty species of lizards and hundreds of birds. There are a number of recreational options from day trips and picnics to more extensive trips through the park, staying at one of the many campgrounds. There is two wheel drive access to Pertendi Hut along the Pinnaroo Bordertown Road, and dry weather two wheel drive access to Pine Hut Soak. The network of four wheel drive tracks throughout the park is well signposted. There are also numerous walking trails within the park, which range from short minute walks to five hour hikes. The park is best visited in the cooler months as summer temperatures are often very high. The park is very large and isolated, therefore sufficient fuel and water supplies must be carried at all times.
