The Dartmoor Railway operates on the route of the old Southern Railway line from Crediton to Okehampton and Meldon Quarry. The 15 mile Dartmoor Railway climbs 600 feet from the Tarka Line, near Coleford through Sampford Courtenay and Okehampton and onwards to Meldon, high on the flank of Dartmoor. The line survived the Beeching axe, and is now being developed by a unique partnership of public and private sectors, to once again serve the picturesque area of Devon and the Dartmoor National Park through which it runs.
Departing from Okehampton Station, the 'Dartmoor Pony' climbs for 2 miles through scenic Devon countryside, past the ruins of medieval Okehampton Castle, through Estrayer Park tunnel, past open meadows (in which you may see a real Dartmoor Pony) finally running alongside the fascinating workings of Meldon stone quarry to Meldon Viaduct station in the Dartmoor National Park
Why not round off your visit with a bite to eat in the buffet car? The buffet is warm and comfortable and an ideal place to 'dry off' for those occasions when the weather turns a little damp. The buffet is situated overlooking the viaduct and has a large decking verandah with panoramic views of Dartmoor itself. The buffet is licensed and can provide a selection of beers, wines and spirits. Teas, coffee, fresh sandwiches and a range of hot snacks are available all day.
