Beverley Minster was started by John of Beverley as a small church; it developed into a monastery in which its founder was actually buried in 721 CE. The building suffered from fires and collapse heralding two hundred years of building work.
The west front is widely believed to be the best example of its kind and originally dates from the early 15th century. It was in the 18th century however that it was painstakingly restored by the Baroque architect Nicholas Hawksmoor and visitors owe much of their appreciation of the building to him.
The interior of Beverley Minster is equally breathtaking. The wooden carving on the miserichords on the choir dates from the 1520's and is of particular note.
