Cissbury Ring is one of Britain's greatest prehistoric hillforts covering 65 acres and one about which myth and folklore abound - from tales of fairies to buried treasure guarded by snakes to UFO's, the place is wrapped in legend.
In the Neolithic period the hill was the most important flint mine in what is now Sussex and many of the open mouths of the flint mines are still visible.
By the Iron Age the ramparts had been built and Cissbury Ring had become the largest hill fort in Sussex. At the time there would also have been a wooden stockade to discourage hostile visitors. It would become fortified again in the Second World War when it was used as a military post for gun placements. These days it is the site of a beautiful walk or two across the Sussex Downs, a great spot for a picnic, some camping or an all night party as well as occasional midsummer's pagan celebration of course.
