The word 'Kakadu' comes from Aboriginal floodplain language called Gagudju, this was one of the languages spoken in the north of the park at the start of the twentieth century.
The park has two distinct seasons, wet and dry. Wet season is between October to April and many of the attractions become cut off, dry season is from May to September and is the best time for visiting.
While Kakadu's attractions are easily reached by road during the Dry Season, road access to some areas can be problematic during the Tropical Summer. However, planes, helicopters, boats and 4x4s make it possible to appreciate Kakadu's charm all year round.
There are many attractions in the park including wetlands and billabongs which are home to fresh and salt water crocodiles. The park is also home to an ubundances of native bird and wild life.
