The most important Roman monument in the country, is without doubt Hadrian's Wall. The most impressive of the wall's remains are widely held to lie between Hexham and Brampton to the west and that stretch is certainly amongst some of the most scenic countryside.
The wall extends over 73 miles from Bowness-on-Solway in the west to Wallsend-on-Tyne in the east and marked the northern boundary of the Roman Empire and kept the 'Barbarians' at bay.
The 'wall' was actually a spectacular feat of military engineering as it was reinforced by forts and mile castles all along the route and now has deservedly been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
