Located in Notting Hill, The Gate theatre is London's only theatre dedicated to producing international work. With an average seating capacity of 70, the Gate is small but ambitious - Stephen Daldry made his mark as Artistic Director of the Gate, bringing casts as large as 20 to a tiny auditorium.
Established in 1979, the Gate was one of the first theatres to produce and collaborate with Eastern European theatre practitioners and opened the way for a rapid proliferation of international work on London's stages.
Recent productions have ranged from the UK premiere of Tshepang, a haunting piece of South African storytelling hailed by John Peter of the Sunday Times as having "the earthly vigour of Barney Simon's Market Theatre and visionary realistic style of Peter Brook", to Daniel Kramer's reinvention of Büchner's Woyzeck. Tejas Verdes, directed by Thea Sharrock and designed by Dick Bird, sold out and extended, prompting one of the longest runs in Gate history.
