The Elbow Room was inspired by a lost weekend in LA during which founder Justin Carter claims to have taken Kiefer Sutherland to the cleaners at 9-ball in some dive bar. London's Westbourne Grove was host to the first Elbow Room, which opened on in the summer of 1995.
