1976 was the year Sensei Matsumoto arrived in Cairns. The seventh Dan instructor had been invited to take over the Cairns Karate Club by its instructor, Mr Jim Pedrola, who recognised the importance of attracting such a highly qualified instructor to Cairns.
Upon Sensei accepting the offer to teach in Cairns the name of the club changed to Matsumoto Karate Academy. The Academy has a proud tradition, the success of its members in competitions is unparalleled in North Queensland. The club has developed many branches in Queensland and today stands as one of the most prominent karate training organisations in Australia. Members travel overseas on organised tours to gain experience and frequently travel throughout Queensland for various competitions.
Many visiting exponents of karate visit the Dojo. There is a constant interchange of ideas from around the world. The Academy is committed to a high standard of martial arts training and is also an exciting and friendly place to train.
