An oasis of tranquillity in the urban sprawl of southwest London, Wimbledon Common is by far the largest green area in the capital. Wimbledon Common covers an area of nearly 1,200 acres from Kingston Upon Thames in the west to Putney in the east.
This vast labyrinth of woods, lakes and clearings has for many years been designated as an area of special scientific interest due to the unusual plant and wildlife found there. Most of the Common is easily accessible to the public and on the average weekend over 10,000 people use the area to walk, run, play sports and simply relax.
