Developed from the garden party atmosphere of the first meeting in 1877, witnessed by a few hundred spectators, The Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon now offers a highly professional tournament attracting an attendance of close to 500,000 people.
Players from over 60 nations regularly compete in front of a crowd of millions worldwide, through the press, radio, Internet and television. This year Andy Murray will become the first Briton to be ranked number three in the world.
The Wimbledon Championships start six weeks before the first Monday in August and lasts approximately a fortnight, until all events are complete.
Demand for Wimbledon tickets always exceeds supply; therefore the Club operates a public ballot for advance sales of a number of Centre, No. 1 and No. 2 Court tickets. Tickets are also sold through The Lawn Tennis Association to affiliated clubs, schools, their membership scheme and foreign tennis associations.
