Monmouth Castle and Regimental Museum is located in the heart of Monmouthshire, and is home to the regimental museum, the castle house and the castle ruin. The small volunteer museum tells the exciting story of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers, which are to this present day the only regiment to have survived from the Militia.
There are many artefact's on display in the museum including the Militia System, the importance of the Dukes of Beaufort, and such regimental distinctions as the Double Royal title, the colours, the Freedoms, and the present status as Senior Regiment of the Reserve Army.
The Great Castle House is known for its quiet dignity of its facade, good proportions, simplicity of detail, and perfect symmetry. The interior is fantastic and has many great features, but what stands out more than any is the striking decoration of the plaster ceilings on the first floor.
The magnificent Monmouth Castle was once in its hay day in the 15th century but now the ruin gives little insight into this once important early Norman castle, which was built by William FitzOsbern, a nephew of the Conqueror. As it stands today only parts of the Great Hall and the Great Tower survive as the ruins.
