Lammermuir Hills

The Lammermuir Hills in East Lothian are one of Scotland's remaining untouched wilderness areas. An area of stunning natural beauty, they form a unique landscape of rolling hills, big skies and a real sense of tranquillity and space.

Rising from the plains, the hills form the southern boundary of East Lothian, the highest point is Meikle Says Law, at 535m (1755 feet). The hills link with the Moorfoot Hills in the west, and run to the coast between St. Abbs Head and Cockburnspath.

There are many popular walking routes in the Lammermuir Hills, which are also an important breeding site for birds such as dunlin, golden plover and curlews. Beautiful mountain hares, extinct in the Scottish Borders since the 18th century, were reintroduced in the 1850s. Scotland's only poisonous snake, the adder, lives on the drier, grassy slopes.
