The College was established in 1979 and named after its principal benefactors, Dr Cecil Green (a founder of Texas Instruments) and his wife, Dr Ida Green. At the centre of the College estate is the outstanding Radcliffe Observatory, built over 200 years ago with inspiration drawn from the Tower of the Winds in Athens.
Green College, Oxford is dedicated to the needs of its nearly three hundred graduate students. It brings together academic excellence and contemporary awareness, with a primary focus on human welfare in today's world. It has a pre-eminence in clinical medicine, as directed by the College's founders.
The College is based on the Radcliffe Observatory, the Observer's House, and the Observatory grounds. The Observatory was built at the end of the eighteenth century and is one of the important scientific buildings in Oxford. The site, which comprises some three and a half acres, is next to the Radcliffe Infirmary and within a few minutes' walk of the Science Area, the Radcliffe Science Library, the Department of Educational Studies and Barnett House, the Department of Applied Social Studies and Social Research. It is about three miles from the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington.
