On the headland of Dunaverty Rock lie the remains on Dunavert Castle famous for being a stronghold of the Lords of the Isles, the MacDonalds of Kintyre.
The castle was the site of many battles, the most famous being in 1647, when 300 men from Royalist forces, loyal to the Stewarts were defeated and put to death by the Covenanters, led by General Leslie Said to have sheltered Robert the Bruce in 1306, prior to his escape to Rathlin Island, off the coast of Ireland. The fortress was razed to the ground, leaving the rock bare. Because of its violent history, the rock is also referred to as Bloody Rock
Access to the site is through the golf course, but the site itself is very steep and dangerous.
