Incorporating Baroque, Palladian and Gothic. Inveraray Castle is a remarkable and unique piece of architecture, it is still a family home to the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, and a shrine to the Campbell Clan.
The parts of the Castle which are open to the public are the main reception rooms and a suite of former bedrooms. On display you can see the famous Armoury Collection, French tapestries, fine examples of Scottish and European furniture, a wealth of other works of art.One of the upstairs rooms is now the `clan' room containing a vast Campbell family tree. In the towering entrance hall has the shields of different Campbell families on the ceiling.
Construction of the castle took 43 years beginning in 1746 to its completion in 1789. The garden covers sixteen acres, of which, around two acres are formal lawns and flowerbeds, the remainder being park and woodland. Although access to the formal gardens is by appointment only.
