The maritime Museum Shipwreck Galleries, in Fremantle, is recognised as the foremost maritime archaeology museum in the southern hemisphere.
The museum displays early exploration and shipwrecks along the treacherous coastline from as early as the 17th century, including original timbers from the Dutch VOC ship the Batavia, wrecked in 1629.
The shipwreck Galleries play an important role in researching and conserving Western Australia's maritime heritage and will continue to do so.
The gallery serves as a living memorial to submariners and those who gave their lives while serving from Fremantle during World War II.
