Byron Bay is one of the most popular whale watching locations in Australia. The convoy of passing whales is part of the annual humpback migration, each June and July thousands of whales migrate north past Byron Bay, then return south in September and October. The crystal blue waters of the bay and surrounding headlands make Byron Bay one of the most perfect Whale Watching venues in Australia. Cape Byron with its lighthouse is the most easterly point in Australia and the perfect vantage point for whale watching.
There are many whale watching tours that operate in the area, giving you the chance to view these majestic mammals up close. In their migration back south in September and October you will witness the newly born calves frolicking in the waters with their mothers.
Byron Bay has kilometres of unspoiled beaches making surfing a popular pass time for locals and visitors alike. With its variety of north, east and south-facing beaches it is no wonder that the area is fast becoming a surfing Mecca. There are a dozen locals surf schools for all skills and ages.
From Belongil Beach right down to Broken Head there are many ideal surf spots catering for all levels of surfers. Main Beach the most protected of Byron's surf areas and the closest to town, and it's adjoining beaches that offer great conditions for beginners, whilst those more experienced may want to venture to the Pass or Wategoes.
