Battersea Power Station was completed in 1939 and instantly became one of the defining features of the London skyline. It was designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who was responsible for the infamous British red telephone box as well as Bankside power station which now houses the Tate Modern.

It's bold classic lines seem to have won almost universal favour. It remains one of the most well known, and well-loved, landmarks in the capital and has even graced several album covers, most notably Pink Floyd's Animals.

The power station was one of the first to begin selling electricity directly to anyone who wanted it as a reaction to the government's plans to create a National Grid. The coal fired monster belched gases into the air and lit homes right up until the early 1980's when the last of its stations became too outdated and discontinued production.
