The trails were originally travelled by three foot guage railways on which wood burning steam trains hauled Karri logs to the sawmill during logging operation carried on in this area in the 1920's. The Karri forest was regenerated in 1928 and the trails are now very pleasant.

Big Brook Dam was built in 1986 to supplement the Pemberton town and Trout Hatchery water supply. The area is now a magnificent expanse of water for fishing, swimming, canoeing or sailbording. Barbecues and a sandy "beach" have been added to make your day at the beach in the forest complete.

There is a very special walk trail around the dam. It has been bitumenised to allow for full wheelchair access with bird hides and fishing platforms. This makes the walk an easy one for prams as well.

Special Features
Further up the Rainbow Trail from the dam is the arboretum. This is an area of eastern states and overseas tree varieties planted over fifty years ago to see how they would survive in this area. There are walk trails and interpretive plaques through the arboretum.
