Day 1 - Depart Perth and take the Great Eastern Highway towards the Perth Hills, your destination is the Avon Valley. Here you have the option of four very different but historic towns; Toodyay, Northam, York and Beverley. Some of the 'must see' attractions in the area include Connor's Mill (Toodyay), the White Swans on the Avon River (Northam), The York Motor Museum and the Avondale Discovery Farm (Beverley). Overnight accommodation can be at any location as they all offer a wide range of quality options.
Day 2 - Today you continue east through the heart of the region, including the centres of Brookton and Corrigin towards your overnight destination of Hyden. This small but vital town is home to the spectacular Wave Rock, a 2,700-million-year-old granite formation in the shape of a giant wave ready to break on the surrounding countryside. The Hippo's Yawn and Mulka's Cave are other sites not to be missed.
Day 3 - Today you travel north towards Narembeen, Bruce Rock and onto Merredin. Here a visit to the historic Railway Museum is worthwhile and maybe a taste of home-made pastry from the local bakery. Travel west along the Great Eastern Highway back towards the Avon Valley for an overnight stay, possibly at Toodyay.
Day 4 - Make your way to the Great Northern Highway and travel north towards New Norcia. This town is a well-preserved example of Spanish influences from the very early settlement days around 1850. To this day the Benedictine Monks call New Norcia home and all visitors are given a warm welcome to this unique precinct. Be sure to visit the Museum and Art Gallery and experience some of the home-grown local produce. So interesting is the town that an overnight stay is certainly worthwhile.
Day 5 - Once again you follow the main highway north passing through Moora and Badgingarra before arriving at the coastal town of Cervantes. Nearby is the Nambung National Park, which receives thousands of visitors each year attracted by the famous Pinnacles. These limestone formations were once thought to be the remains of an ancient forest and rise in stark contrast to the yellow/red desert landscape surrounding the immediate area. The Pinnacles is the final stop on the journey around the Heartlands and from here it's a leisurely 3-hour drive back to Perth, alternatively head north towards the Mid West region.
