Penguin island, 42km south from the centre of Perth, 700m off the coast of Rockingham, is one of the few places in the world where visitors can see little penguins in an idyllic coastal island setting.
Penguin island is home to about one thousand two hundred little penguins, forming the largest breeding colony of these birds in Western Australia. The Penguin Island Interpretive Centre is a viewing and information centre which allows visitors to view delightful little penguins frolicking in an environment similar to their natural habitat.
The centre houses birds that have been rescued from injury, and which would be unlikely to survive in the wild. The island also boats grassed picnic areas and extensive board walks for visitors to explore the island - a great half or full day tour from Perth.
Penguin Island is in the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park - abundant with marine life (including Dolphins) and great for diving.
