Construction of the Old Gaol, built with local stone that was quarried with the assistance of Aboriginal labour, commenced in 1886. The large octagon shaped building contains four wings each of which housed up to 40 prisoners. A visit to the museum is a harsh reminder of our colonial past.
Booklets on the history of the Old Gaol can be obtained from the Roebourne Visitor Centre, which is housed in the Old Gaol along with the Museum and the Arts and Crafts Group.
A visit to the museum is an educational and enjoyable experience. Roebourne is the gateway to the beautiful Point Samson Peninsula, the historic Port of Cossack and the town of Wickham. Bookings can be made for the very popular Port to Port Tour.
