Newstead House is one of Queensland's most significant residences with spacious verandahs, gardens and lawns down to the Brisbane River. Dating from 1846, when it was built for the pastoralist Patrick Leslie, Newstead was extended over the years that followed, becoming the quintessential Australian homestead.
All-embracing verandahs catch the cooling breezes and its distinctive balustrade has become the inspiration for other domestic residences. Evidence from the original 1840's cottage survives in what was the ground floor of that building.
Upstairs, Newstead House is furnished in the gracious style of the late Victorian period...the prisms of the ruby glass lustre vases reflect the morning sun, the long-case clock tolls the hour and the music box plays a sweet tune. Newstead Park - as a remnant of the original Estate - is a tranquil oasis set in the midst of a busy City.
Devonshire teas available Sunday afternoons between 1400 and 1630 hours from March to November inclusive. Cold drinks available from the ground floor Souvenir Shop during hours of opening.
Closed Saturdays, Anzac Day, Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and their gazetted public holidays.
