Anakie is a small town which was founded in the 1887 after a find of zircons at Retreat Creek. It has a railway station, hotel-motel and local houses inviting visitors to enter and look at gems.
Rubyvale has a small shopping centre and a pub.
Sapphire has a general store, gem shops, a caravan park and an sports oval.
Today, individual operators, visitors and companies are attracted to the gemfields. Large-scale sapphire operations exist between Rubyvale and Sapphire.
