Mount Surprise and O'Briens Creek Gem Fields make up some of the best fossicking in Far North Queensland.

Take a choice of tours or go alone, hire or buy your own equipment. Fossicking equipment is available for hire in Mount Surprise where you can also purchase a fossicking licence. "Tag-a-long" tours to the gem fields are also available there. There is a lot of information available covering the six gem and gold fossicking areas in the region. The possibility of finding topaz, aquamarine, quartz, peridot, moonstone, agate, fluorite and gold is enormous.

O'Briens Creek Gem Fields have been designated as a fossicking area since 1995. Topaz and other gemstones are found in alluvial gravels which are up to 2 m deep.
