The Great Alpine Road is a fully sealed 308-kilometre route that starts at Bairnsdale in the heart of Gippsland and ends in Wangaratta in the north-east. This extraordinary journey winds past lofty mountains, valleys, forests, rivers, vineyards and farms.

Bairnsdale sits on the banks of the Mitchell River. Heading North from Bairnsdale the route travels delightful country villages including Bruthen, Ensay, Swifts Creek and Omeo or depending on the route Cassillis. From Omeo the Great Alpine Road ascends upwards to Alpine wonderlands Dinner Plain and Mount Hotham. This is a ski Mecca with 245 hectares of skiable slopes.

Danny's Lookout provides breath taking views of Mount Feathertop - the second-highest mountain in Victoria. The road then descends into the villages of Harrietville and Bright. The vineyards of Mytrleford indicate the epic journey is drawing to a close. The Great Alpine Road ends at Wangaratta, a town with a broad main street, historic buildings and riverside parklands.
