Gascoyne River is often described as the blood-stream of Carnarvon.

The river was discovered by George Grey on 5th March 1839. It is 8 hundred kilometres in length, and together with its major contributor, the Lyons River, it has an encatchment area of 26,381 square miles.

This area lies entirely to the east of the Kennedy Ranges and extends from there for some 3 hundred miles inland. Very little water flows into the Gascoyne River west of the Kennedy Ranges.
