Grand views of the Ophthalmia Ranges and surrounding plains are the reward of climbing to the summit of Mount Newman, 1055 metres above sea level.
The climb is not particularly difficult, starting from a 4WD track which ends nearly half way up the northern side. Allow about 2 hours for the return climb to this point. Walking from the highway adds another 2 hours return.
The track to Mount Newman turns off the Great Northern Highway 27 kilometres north of town. The track is 2 km to the start point of the climb, and, it is recommend that 4WD vehicles only be used.
Care should be taken when driving up the steep grades. Please note take plenty of drinking water for this climb.
