Further Information
The Margate train was built in England in 1950. It was a passenger train that travelled from the North West Coast to Burnie to Hobart and on a branch line to Launceston. The train is 100 metres long with 7 carriages. It has been off the track since 1978. The Margate Train is the resting place of Tasmanias last commercial passenger train. But its a hive of activity, with carriages housing a variety of retail outlets. You'll find a licensed pancake restaurant and cafe, bookshop, barber, remedial massage and gift shop. Nearby are two warehouses packed with a fascinating range of antiques, jewellery and second hand goods.
