In 1896 Joshua Slocum visited the Port of Devonport, and engendered some interest in sailing in the area. Sailing races were held on a regular basis, and in 1906 a sailing club was formed. At that time the races were sponsored by Boags Brewery.

The Mersey Yacht Club was formed in 1923, and after several moves, was finally located (in 1974) at the site now known as 1 Anchor Drive, Devonport. Overlooking the Mersey River, the Yacht Club caters for all levels of sailing, from Juniors, beginning Seniors, cruisers and social sailing, to competitive club and inter-club racing. Twilight races occur every second Wednesday in the daylight saving months, and regular racing occurs on Saturdays.
