The Bethungra Rail Spiral is a 1940's engineering feat, constructed to allow rail engines to negotiate the steep slope. On the Sydney to Melbourne line the spiral goes through two tunnels and over the top of the hill and through a big cutting at the spur. This is the only example of a 360 degree spiral in Australia.
