Irvinebank was born out of the discovery of tin in 1882, in an area known then as Gibbs Creek, by a group of prospectors including Billy Eales, Jimmy Gibbs, Jack Pollard and Andy Thompson. They were prospecting west of Herberton tin field which had expanded as far as Watsonville the previous year. These initial prospectors were soon bought out by a consortium including John Moffat who brought to the area considerable knowledge of modern tin mining and processing.
