Like all things Canberra, Black Mountain Peninsula has been recreated and redeveloped - transformed into something wonderful. Up until the 1960s the northern tip of Black Mountain Peninsula was nothing more than a rubbish dump.
Luckily, foresight and a waterside location saw the redevelopment of the peninsula into a waterside recreation area. On the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, it was picturesque enough to be introduced to a wide range of greenery. The water's edge has been graced with willows, swamp cypress (magnificent displays in autumn) and local river oak.
Over the years, Black Mountain Peninsula has become a popular place at weekends. Boats can be launched and swimming is possible during the warmer months of the year. There are stunning views on which Canberra is reflected upon. Admire the beauty of the landscape and the magnificent views across Tarcoola Reach to the west and West Lake to the east.
