The Shrine of Remembrance is Victoria's largest and most visited war memorial and is one of Melbourne's most recognised landmarks. The Shrine is a lasting memorial to the ANZAC spirit and all that they fought for. This is remembered at more than 120 ceremonies held at the Shrine annually.
Every November 11th (the formal end to World War 1), the lives of nearly 62,000 Australians are remembered at the Shrine on Remembrance Day. This day is a particularly poignant day at the Shrine. Victoria's leaders join with other members of the community to mark the day and at exactly 11am the Ray of Light passes over the Stone of Remembrance and illuminates the word LOVE.
The Shrine of Remembrance is open from 10am - 5pm daily, closed only on Christmas Day and Good Friday. Although admission is free, the Shrine welcomes donations. There are guided tours at 11am and 2pm daily, leaving from the Visitor Centre. Services of Remembrance (featuring the Ray of Light) are held every half hour staring at 10:30am in the Sanctuary.
