Melbourne's Living Museum of the West is a community museum, with an ecomuseum focus. Set up in 1984, the museum services what was then seen as a disadvantaged and heavily industrialised region with a high migrant population from more than 70 different countries.

The museum is best known for its outreach programme and close involvement with the community. It implements innovative techniques in involving the local community in researching, documenting and presenting the heritage and history of a previously overlooked patchwork of sub-cultures.
