We stayed in one of the self contained units for a week in Jan 09. We chose the Bentleigh on a friends recommendation and the price.
I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the unit - two good sized bedrooms, massive living area and the kitchen was bigger than mine at home and had a full size wooden dining table. The units are old, but are well maintained and furnishings are fairly new. All the crockery, cutlery & cooking equipment you need is supplied. Lots of cupboard space in the kitchen, a full size stove/oven, wardrobes in the bedroom and big television in the lounge.
Whilst the units are self contained, you can still order breakfast and the cleaners come in every day to make beds, change towels & bins & clean. They even do the dishes! This was a nice surprise.
Car parking & access are the only negatives in my opinion. The car spaces are a bit small and you can only enter & leave the motel in one direction as it is located right on the Pacific Highway. There isn't much the owners can do about these things though.
Whilst the motel is on the highway you don't hear the traffic as the windows facing the road are double glass.
The motel is located right in the centre of Coffs. Shops, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants & take away shops are all located within two blocks, which gives you the choice of picking up groceries to cook for yourself, grabbing take away or eating out.
The owners were very friendly and helpful. One night we felt like an ice cream and asked where the nearest shop was. On learning that the takeaway across the road's freezer was out, the lady gave us a drumstick each from her own freezer!
If you want to be right on the beach, this isn't the motel for you. But if you don't mind a 5 minute drive to the beach and you want a reasonably priced unit, the Bentleigh is definitely worth a look.
