I made the stupid decision of booking a car with thrifty and here is my story: I had brought a small camper trailer and needed a car with a tow bar to tow it to where I was keeping it for the few weeks. I expected it to take to purchase my own 4WD. I called Thrifty and got a call centre. Explained I needed a car with a tow bar to tow a camper, and the girls says I can book you one but I cant guarantee it will have a tow bar (hello what point is a towing car with no tow bar??). I explained to her that it was 100% essential it had a tow bar and asked to speak to someone at the pick up office to ensure it had a tow bar. Was put through to a woman, explained what I needed and she said yes I can guarantee you a car with a tow bar. She asked me how far I was travelling & I told her where I was going. She said 'that would be just over 200km Ill give you a ute with a 300km mileage for $90. She then said actually I can discount that for you to $85, and thats including a reduced liability. So I booked the car for Saturday 29 September to pick up in the morning and drop off in the afternoon. She confirmed that verbally. I later thought it was odd she hadnt asked for an email address to email confirmation. Anyway a few days prior to the 29th I got a call from someone at Thrifty to confirm my booking for the 28th! I said no I need it on the 29th and shes like oh so you want to change it then? I said no I booked for the 29th that was always the date I intended to use the car. Anyway sorted that out, the 29th arrives and I get into their office, she says I need your credit card to do a $250 authorisation on the card for security, and the $141 for the rental. I said hang on - I was quoted $85, i'm not paying you $141. At this point a guy - who I think was her manager - a VERY rude man starts being very confrontational telling me that basically they never would have quoted me that and it must have been with only 100km or a large excess. I said no it was not - I assume you record the calls why don't you listen to the booking call rather than arguing with me. Anyway they don't record calls. He said he would ring the person who made the booking (I could hear from the conversation she was saying she didn't remember) he got off the phone and said 'she said she never quoted you that'. I walked out and luckily found a car elsewhere (at a much better price). I later found they had put a $250 authorisation on my credit card! The only thing thrifty about thrifty cars is their service, and competence. So please if you are renting a car DON'T use thrifty - you may regret it.
